The Delicate Balance between the ‘In-Laws’

A marriage is not just between two people, but two families. We’ve all heard it. But the real meaning of this statement is understood only once a person gets married. Once the eyes meet, romance blossoms, promises are made, lives are committed, in comes marriage. Not an easy decision to make in the first place. But once you fall in love, there is no turning back. You can’t see the flaws in your be(i)tter half, and you definitely can’t see your in-laws, let alone their flaws and idiosyncrasies! But what is it that makes the relationship between your spouses’ family and yourself so difficult?

While we don’t claim to know that, we do know that a lot comes from the expectations that we put on ourselves vs the expectations the in-laws put on us. A husband wants to make sure that he provides for the wife. “I’m the man of the house”. While he is already trying so hard, the added pressure of pleasing the wife’s parents is also present. Like we see in THE FAMILY VACATION, Rishi (Karan V Grover) tries hard to impress his father-in-law (Ayub Khan), while he gets no support from Rohini (Chhavi Mittal). Why does she not help him? Why does any wife not help her husband? The answer to that is simple. A daughter never sees the flaws in her doting father simply because he has no flaws in front of her. He is perfect. He is all a man needs to be. He is her father.

But the same holds true for a daughter-in-law. And in most Indian households it is more so with the daughter-in-law because she has to live with her in-laws 24-7 unlike the husband. The war between a daughter-in-law and a mother-in-law is so deep-rooted that it does not even get any eyebrows raised anymore. It is a done thing. A mother feels threatened with another woman’s presence in her house, in her… kitchen! And the new woman feels like this is her house since she lives there with her husband (besides she has always been told by her mother “apne ghar jana hai ek din”). But does the mother-in-law not live in that house with the exact same notion and thought process? Yes she does, and that is the reason for most conflicts!

But there is a question that pops up in my mind. Tell me in the comments if you can answer that. Are there any two people in this world that lived under the same roof without ever fighting/arguing? A husband and wife fight, a brother and sister fight, a father and son fight, a mother and daughter fight. Yet eyebrows are raised only on the strained relationship between a son/daughter-in-law and a father/mother-in-law. Why so?

This debate can go on forever. However, what Shitty Ideas Trending aims is not to see you fight or debate about the trivialities, but just to see you smile! And hence, we bring to you the next episode of THE FAMILY VACATION, starring Ayub Khan, Deepika Amin,Preetika Chawla, Gunjan Utreja, Chhavi Mittal and Karan V Grover, created by the talented Mohit Hussein.
